Social Responsibility: Advocacy
Colon Cancer Awareness
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cancer killer in the United States for men and women combined. Yet it is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. In fact, if everyone aged 50 and older were regularly screened, experts say up to 60 percent of these deaths could be prevented.
In most cases, colon cancer develops from abnormal growths called polyps in the colon or rectum. Polyps can be removed before they turn into cancer; screening tests also can find colorectal cancer early, when it is most treatable. Because routine colorectal cancer screening saves lives, and because Olympus is the leading endoscopy company, we continue to dedicate efforts toward CRC awareness and education.
With a variety of programs to inform employees, as well as customers and the public, about the importance of early detection, Olympus is committed to increasing colon cancer screening rates. We are especially proud of our collaboration with professional medical societies and numerous colon cancer organizations. By helping to educate, inform and create awareness about CRC through direct consumer outreach online (crcawareness.com), various sponsorships, education, and more, we are helping to save lives.
Olympus is committed to working with policymakers, healthcare experts, physicians and patient organizations to expand colon cancer awareness and access to screening. As a global leader in providing solutions for digestive disease diagnosis and treatment, it is our goal to be a resource on this important social cause by bringing our expertise to the public policy debate in public forums, research initiatives and educational campaigns.
